Description

Arabs Confused by Turkey-Iran Regional Competition Arabs see a competition between Turkey and Iran over influence in the Middle East, and while almost all believe Ankara is looking for a peaceful role, many suspect Iran is trying to undermine moderate Arab states in service of its agenda. Mustafa Fiqqi, an Egyptian commentator, argued in a June 3 article in the Beirut-based influential daily AN NAHAR that Islam, the religion of most Arabs, Turks and Iranians is a major common ground among the three ethnicities. "The common cultural heritage, which is a product of the Islamic history, created similar cultural grounds, especially that Islam has religious and worldly teachings and interferes in the daily lives of people," said Fiqqi, who also writes commentaries in the Cairo-based daily al-Ahram.
